Michael Sonola After-Parties: What You Need To Know

Jun 15, 2026

#1 What do you mean by "after-parties"?

After-parties have been an ever-growing culture for many young ethnic communities, especially among black people in London.

When the windrush generation first arrived to the UK, many black communities were often excluded from mainstream British night clubs. In response, they started hosting underground, unlicensed events which became known as blue parties.

To be honest, this was during the 1950s, 60s, 70s and 80s, so it's rare to see such big gatherings taking place today as restriction policies became enforced over time for Black communities. What you see now are the smaller, less rowdy events that take place at discreet apartments across London (aka house parties). These are the kind of parties I prefer to throw.

#2 Why should you attend to them?

Unlike most mainstream clubs and parties, there are a few key differences that keep my guestlist energised, engaged, and excited.

  • Small by design. All parties are kept intentionally small with spaces limited to 15-20 people -- allowing for a more personalised experience.

  • Exclusive locations. I often organise house parties that are discreet in their location and gives away a soul-like feeling.

  • Black-community focused. Parties are focused around black communities with music playlist featuring well-known afro artists like Asake, Wizkid, Davido, Burna Boy, Tems, and more.

#3 What's the origin behind doing this?

The idea to start throwing late-night parties actually started with my friends.

Every summer my friends and I would rent out a place to spend a few days touring around London. Soho. Hyde Park. Piccadilly. Brixton. Notting Hill. You name it.

But after a while we got a little tired of the trips. Most of the clubs in the area were tailored for a certain demographic and didn't fit my vibe. Every year we see more and more bars and clubs closing down for all kinds of reasons (don't get me started!) To make things worse, crime rates have been at an all time high with gangs targeting large gathering and festivals.

So we decided to save ourselves by gathering a few friends in a nice discreet apartment to have fun and still make the most of our summer. One friend thought about interviewing people on the street and learn more about how we could offer organised invitations. They became valuable contacts that spread word about our parties.

#4 How will they work?

The concept for running this kind of events is simple. Although the structure and timing of each party might change, keep in mind the following steps:

  • Complete the event registration form. The event registration form (click here to start) will tell us more about you, where you're coming from, and weather can arrange transport for you.

  • Unauthorised guests will not be allowed in. This includes any friends that guests bring with them to the party -- they must register and complete the form separately to be added into the guestlist.

  • Stay tuned for updates on your inbox. I regularly send updates and announcements via email to keep you informed and engaged with everything coming up.
