Michael Sonola On The Future Of Content Creation
Sep 6, 2026
Today I want to share the opportunity to talk about how content creators are evolving as a whole, why it's never been more important to become a creator, what actually sparked this shift, and how to get started today.
#1 What do you mean by "content creation is evolving"?
Content creation has evolved drastically since the early days of social media. It has sparked almost unlimited opportunities, unlimited avenues, unlimited forms of leverage across business, science, technology, and sports. And something tells me that almost everyone that I know personally has some version in their head of starting a Youtube channel, a Tiktok page, or maybe they already do but want to turn into a revenue stream for their careers.
I want to be clear that when I say that "content creation is evolving", I don't mean you need to become a creator in the traditional sense. I'm simply talking about using content in better ways that will serve your life today...
*Maybe there's a specific group of people that you're targeting for an event you're hosting...
Maybe you're looking for a coach or mentor to guide your project...
Maybe you're just passionate about sharing your ideas and sparking new connections...
These are the kind of questions that get me excited to create content.
The only caveat is that most of these opportunities exist on the internet, across virtual domains, which make it harder for the mind to recognise the opportunities in the first place. After all, our pattern recognition reflex evolved for the savannah's and jungles, where our survival was tied to the limitations of our environment.
That's really what keeps us paralysed and anxious despite the infinite ways to build your tribe, your empire.
#2 Why is starting a Youtube channel so important now?
Honestly, it doesn't matter weather you're posting vlogs, tutorials, documentaries, or even five-star competitions. Youtube is still the only platform where every piece of content matures over time, making it more discoverable on search engines than platforms like Instagram, Tiktok, or X.
There's never been a better time to get started on Youtube, especially if you already spend a lot of time there. You can immediately see that the people who engage with your content on Youtube are more likely to be active subscribers and stewards of your brand.
In general, you only need 10K-15K views on average to build a reliable network of sponsors, as long as you take the time to learn the skills that will make you marketable online. If you can learn to capture and retain attention for a 30-45 minute video consistently, that gives you a much longer tail to promote anything you want than a 1-2 minute reel.
#3 What's the origin behind creating content?
This is going to sound funny, but content goes far beyond posting on social media -- it's an expression of who we are fundamentally. Outside of the algorithms and virals loops; taste, intuition, and creativity are the parts that create a real brand, a real presence.
Our ancestors were the first people who realised the potential of weaving parts of our imagination and creativity for things like hunting, farming, trading and commerce. These activities often depended on thousands, if not millions of people to collaborate effectively towards a collective goal.
Goals often exist in a hierarchy, from physiological goals that depend on our need for food and substance, to self-generated goals that motivate people into founding their own empire, create works of art, or discover new outlets for creativity. The same thing applies today but on a much larger scale.
#4 How do I actually get started?
Find your voice. Search for creators that you enjoy watching on Youtube, filter by their most popular videos, and brainstorm 10-15 new ideas each week. Don’t just copy. Bring your own ideas to life but framed around what works and has been validated by their audience.
Turn books, blogs, and essays into scripts. This is how you become magnetic online — by taking ideas that have already been shown to work and expressing them in different ways and angles.
Build an email list. To make the most of building an online presence, you need a way to reach to your subscribers outside the algorithm — weather you’re launching a program, an IRL event, or a store. Give your subscribers a dedicated page for putting their email address and keeping them updated with a newsletter.
Cross-promote content via newsletter. Aside from keeping your audience notified, building an email newsletter becomes powerful for cross-promoting your Youtube subscribers to other channels.
